Glossary of MRANG - Matt Bishun

Media language
  • A term to describe the way in which the meaning of a media text is conveyed to its target audience. 
  • Various technical codes are used in order to this, for example; camerawork, mise en scene, sound, editing and many more.
  • Makes up one of five theoretical concepts.

Representation

  • The way in which media represents individuals, groups, events and issues.
  • Stereotypes are commonly used in many films and media texts because the audience will immediately understand what is being represented.
  • Disability is one, a short drama in which this is portrayed is 'The Silence'. The character below is deaf and we can see throughout this series her emotions, experiences and facial expressions.








Audience












Narrative

  • The order in which the story is presented. Every film has some form of narration.
  • There are various narrative structures to think about; Linear and non linear, Circular and Multi-strand.
  • Todorov's theory was a 5 stage process which described the change in positions as the film progressed.
  1. Equilibrium - Start
  2. Disruption - of normality
  3. Confrontation - attempts to deal with disruption
  4. Resolution - ending to confrontation
  5. New Equilibrium - new beginning

Genre


  • The type of film (romantic, mystery, historical).
  • Genres are made to change and evolve over time. Genres are targeted at consumer needs.

  • Each new genre may re-invent an existing product to make money. For example Heinz baked beans.
